About Us: Cmed Technology Ltd

Cmed Technology helps research organizations meet the challenges of 21st century clinical trials. It does this using Timaeus, an eClinical platform purposely-built to respond on-demand to the needs of investigators, data managers and study teams, which provides the freedom to manage any type of data, for any protocol, anywhere.

Timaeus provides a single platform for electronic trial design, electronic data capture (EDC), monitoring, medical coding, data management and reporting. It has been used since 2003 on several hundred studies operating across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. These studies have demonstrate Timaeus’ ability to meet a wide range of clinical challenges “out-of-the-box”, from adaptive trial execution and rapid set up of single-unit clinics to real-time operation in remote emerging markets and high-scale operation on multi-thousand-person studies.

Cmed Technology has roots from the University of Oxford, starting in 2000 as ThirdPhase Ltd. After acquisition by Cmed in 2002, it became Cmed’s technology research and development division, where it developed and proved its on-demand capabilities from within the Cmed Group’s operational contract research organization (CRO). In May 2010, the Cmed Group commercially launched Cmed Technology to provide Timaeus directly to study sponsors, functional service providers and contract research organisations and to more easily partner with systems integrators, consultancies and technology providers.

Cmed Technology’s Advantage: Distributed On-Demand Architecture

At the heart of Timaeus is its private, validated cloud computing architecture.

Early on, Cmed Technology realised that legacy eClinical architectures presented too many constraints to support 21st century clinical trials. Their centralized databases easily became a performance choke point and served as single points of global system failure. Their reliance solely on Internet browsing forced all users (sponsors, data managers, monitors and clinicians) to have dedicated, high-speed Internet connections—a condition that is often not met in the real-world.

As a result, Cmed Technology took a different approach, bringing together virtualization, content management, publishing, web, appliance and mobile technologies into a leading-edge distributed architecture that resembles the world’s largest, most reliable information systems rather than legacy eClinical ones. As a result, customers of Timaeus can respond on-demand to clinical trials needs—in a fully-validated manner

Because of Timaeus’ forward-looking distributed architecture, Cmed Technology is able to harnesses new innovation as it occurs—without large effort or investment. Cmed Technology first did this in 2004 conducting clinical trials entirely over mobile phone connections, enabling operation in markets where mobile data technology was “leapfrogging” fixed-line technology. Later, in 2007 it quickly leveraged its abstract data architecture to enable CDISC import and export of both transactional data and metadata. In 2009, it integrated trial simulation technology into its native adaptive trial design and execution capabilities. In 2010, it added the “plug-and-play” ability to support tablet computing, expanding the range of interface technologies available to doctors, nurses and monitors
